What is it?
Ok, they call it a gilet, so it's a vest under a jacket, I'm assuming. But a vest with big-ol' lapels?

I'm assuming it's over a corset, petticoat, fluffy bum roll, and skirt...

More pix of a repro here.

I'm still not 100% on board with the chemise dress thang so I might lean more towards something like this. I still get to have really big hair... :-)

Can't help really, Isn't there something similar in "stage and screen"?

But ditto the gorgeous!

I love that jacket :)

There's a another really good repro of it on the last disk of the BBC Aristocrats series. Louisa wears it.

It doesn't look too hard. It's basically a zone front jacket. You'd have two pieces of fabric coming from the side seams, the front and the angled front piece (well, obviously!), then just extend them so you can fold back the fronts as lapel things.

It's nice that the back collar doesn't really have anything to do with the front collar, so a tracing shape of the neckline and extending it till it looks right thing should work. It's what I did on my riding habit. I don't have specific pictures of the collar, but there are some decent shots of it attached on my making of page: http://www.koshka-the-cat.com/riding_habit1.html

I hope that makes sense :)

And oh, very different look, but same general technique can be seen on Kendra's zone-front dress page: http://demodecouture.com/projects/anglaise/

Hmmmm, you'd do a zone-front approach? I am guessing from the original Kyoto pix that it is 2 garments, a jack t & vest, since the jacket doesn't look like it fastens closed in any way.

Thanks for the collar tip - I hate collars! LOL!

I hate collars too :)

I'd definitely do a zone front approach. Even though it may not be the way the original is done, it is a plausible period constrution. And anyway, I wouldn't want to mess with making the collar on two separate pieces each time I wore it. I would much rather tack the two collars together (probably at the little part where they meet) and be done with it!

Also, I think it would be easier to get to hang right, because the outer jacket flap thing (I'm so techincal) would have a really firm base in being sewn in the side back seam. That way it would just flop into the right position.

Very good point. The back of the jacket is snug and wouldn't stay that way if it were separate. I knew I kept you around for a reason... ;-p

Yeah - my hunch is that the two items are sewed as one. I doubt the vest has a back.

I love that jacket! It's in the KCI collection and they made replicas of it for Jefferson in Paris and The Affair of the Necklace. (It might be the same replica used in both movies!)

Pics from both movies here:

Interesting...
The one for Richardson looks closer to the original...

The one for Scacci has a much different collar placement and the "tail" is much different.

The Jefferson in Paris one I saw for real - there are probably some more exhibit pics of it throughout this page too!
