I used some needle lube and went very slowly and it didn't tear up the trim too badly. It's laying flatter, too, which is nice. Now the problem is that it's slipping around under the presser foot and it's not very straight.

No matter what I do with this crap it looks like crap. Crap. Did I mention it's crap?

I am tempted to throw in the towel on this and try a whole new sleeve treatment. I've cut up all the remaining celery silk I had to make these strips, and I'm pretty sure the base layer was the last of the apple green silk as well. I will have to drag the whole pile of crap out tomorrow and see what I might have enough of to start over on these craptacular sleeves.

I have also been over and over the silver braid trim placement on the kirtle & underdress, and there is just enough to place a thick & thin row bordering each piece. The problem is to my eye it doesn't quite look right since the wider trim has more "space" in it and the thinner trim is denser. See what I mean?

It's a little thing but it bugs me. Now I have to go and see if they have any more of that trim stashed somewhere since it was vintage and I bought all they had at the time.

I am seriously displeased.

Crap.

I third that the trim looks great. Do you still see much of a difference when you stand back and take a look as if you were another person looking at you? I actually like the differences in density - the narrower trim defines while the larger trim fills.

Uhhh... I think it looks gorgeous! And I actually like the difference in densities.

But I'm sorry to hear that you are unhappy with it. :(

It probably displeases you only because you are looking at it from a foot away. It looks lovely in the photos. The trims complement each other well.

OK, OK, I GIVE! I am obviously outvoted. LOL!

The trouble I'm having is with the strapwork and the soutache on the last post, but I hear you all loud and clear regarding the thick/thin trim. Ok, I'll keep it.

Now I have to figure out how much I can use on under-sleeves and what to do about those. THAT'S the part that's crap, crap, crap.

*blink, blink* Like everyone else...I can't see the problem. It looks lovely and balanced. The silver looks particularly striking with the aubergine, is it?

You know...It may be "vintage", but I could almost swear I have seen that trim or something terribly similar still being produced. As I recall it was in gold...

I think in this case "vintage" meant "on our shelves too long." I've never seen it in gold, though, but plenty of people have asked me if I ever found it in gold. If you have a source let me know.

The plum tafetta is actually no longer the fabric for this dress, but I got far enough along on one pendant sleeve to show how the trim would look. That's what happens when you use every scrap cuttin gout your dress and your cat sprays it.

gggrrrrrrrrr

I have something very similar in my own stash. It's exactly like the wider of your two, but with an extra bit at each side. And it is gold. It seems to me I bought it JoAnns. I do not believe it is Europa, which has since gone out of business...so that's good news. Next time I'm by there, I've check their stock to see if they have this one of your's. Although sadly, they seem to be downsizing their trim section. :(

Oh what a dreadful shame about the taffeta. As a lover and owner of two dreadfully behaved male pussies...I know all about the sprayin' thing! Little buggers!!! But, don't give up!! Try some of those enzymatic cleaners. Some of them are wonderfully effective. You can also take it to a dry cleaners and let them try their professional hand at stain and odor removal. Really, what have you got to lose?...and what might you gain if they succeed. Worth a shot at any event, I should think.

Well, it wasn't really a tragedy since I had come to dislike the tafetta anyway and wasn't inspired to work on the dress. It was poly and I had intended to use the cheapest stuff I could find as this was to be a learning project. Once i found that trim, though, I resented my fabric choice since even though it was a good deal, I didn't want to put all that lovely trm on such a cheap base fabric.

It is now a teal whale-less courdeory, looks like very short pile velveteen, and is going to be very pretty, all cotton, and wearable in the local heat. All the underlayers are linen or silk, and with that silver trim I think I'm going to like this dress very much! :-)
