Sometimes I get lucky on ebay. tee hee! My three vintage saris came today and they are soooooooo beautiful!
I always like to buy saris because if I hunt well, they can be embroidered beautifully, silk or silk blend, a really good deal if you look at it as a per yard price for a 6 yard piece. I have to say though that it is pretty rare to find one (let alone 3) that is embroidered in a symmetrical design. Usually you get paisleys, animals, or floral motifs that are repeating but not symmetrical, and therefore not usable for Elizabethan stuff I like to make. But not today! I found 3, yes 3, with completely symmetrical embroidery patterns including the heavy designs on the pallau and they are in my hot little hands! tee hee!
The red one screams forepart to me, has a diamond shape repeat, which I've never seen on a sari before, and also comes with the little sun motif like ER1 wore in the Armada portrait, and others. tee hee!
The blue one is actually the most lovely shade of, well, I'd say it's pastel periwinkle blue; rather darker than the picture and very pretty against the gold embroidery. This one is for *ahem* I'm not telling! It's for my CC'07 Gala ensemble. Tee Hee!
The green one I just bought because it was the most beautiful color green - like the best kept lawn on the block. Like grass in Hobbiton. And again, a diamond shape symmetrical embroidery. I don't know what this one wants to be yet so I'm open to inspiration & suggestions! TEE HEE!
Now if only I could find time and energy to sew...
