This weekend

My goal is to do something. Even knit one row! I need to do stuff! Because I like it and forget that I do.

Work Halloween

I've decided to wear the 20s cat dress to Halloween at work on Thursday. Then a three day weekend.

Napping hobby achieved. This was the first real, fall asleep nap I've had in ages. Lately I've just been dozing...

So...

I think I figured out why my backwards brain thought far was near and near was far. Far was on the top of the menu and near at the bottom. So it looked like far was nearer the car in front and words meant nothing apparently...

Database maintenance

Good morning, afternoon, and evening!

We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)

I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.

Ta for now!

Whew!

The Saturday puzzle was the hardest in a long time, but I did it without any lookups. I did check some weird sounding answers, but I didn't look any trivia up. Whew!

Oops

I looked at the settings (why do cars have settings?) on my car and I had changed the collision warning system to far. This is why it was yelling at me so much.

When I did it, I thought it was what I wanted. My brain does this reverse-y thing sometimes. I still remember staring at flipped shapes during an elementary school IQ test and thinking this is not the part of my IQ that's high. So I thought somehow that far meant near. I remember trying to puzzle it out in my head when I set it. Now I can't even think of what my brain process was when I did it, but it should yell at me as much anymore!

Nothing really

My new car is sixth months old and still doesn't feel like mine. Its first service helped and it feels a little more mine. It seems such a petty complaint because *gestures vaguely* but it's just weird.

I find it amusing that I think stick is easier because muscle memory is real. The number of times I've tried to leave work and was convinced the car was broken because it wouldn't go is comical. I park on the street at work. In my old car, I'd park in first. I'm still not used to having to move from park to drive, so I push the gas pedal and nothing.

Half the time it's a jerky start because it's easier to ease one pedal up and the other down than to push one smoothly down. Anyone watching probably thinks I have a manual and am bad at it. Fortunately that doesn't happen at lights.

It can stop yelling about obstacles any day now. Today the collision warning beep came in when I had my foot on the brake and was going 12 miles an hour stopping behind another car at a stop sign. I was about two car lengths behind it. So far, my foot has been in the brake every time it's gone off. At least I'm used to it now. The first time it happened I jumped and my foot came off the brake so I ended up stopping way closer to the car in front of me than I liked.

It's a nice enough car, but I honestly miss roll up windows. I'm weird...

Ready

I'm ready for daylight saving time to end. It's dark when I wake up and that's not ok.

It's Monday so I'm predictably tired. But also, work is going strangely well this year. My students are pretty agreeable and it's amazing how much easier everything is.

And I haven't knit in how long? Maybe after dinner tonight.

And the cats are fine.

So just some things to say.

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

Three days

All jobs should have three day weekends. Two isn't enough. Work life balance should be mandatory.

Another day in 2025

Another protest. It was a good ine. I think my favorite thing about these is how happy people are. You can forget everything going on for a little bit because no one there wants it to go on.

Hmm

We have staff development day tomorrow. It feels like Friday. The kids have a weekend, so it feels like we do too. I always worry when a Thursday really feels like Friday, I'll forget to go to work.
